I realize I am not the first person to say "Anne Rice really knew how to depict grief and mental illness"
But I'm up to the part of Vampire Lestat where he's found out his mom is dying and he goes out with Nicki and gets drunk at an inn, then has this giant existential crisis about the meaninglessness of death, and spends the next week or so freaking everyone out with really blunt questions about existence and whether or not we ever find out whether our lives had purpose
And as I'm rereading this in my 30s, I'm like
"Oh yeah, I had this exact same mental health breakdown when my mom had terminal cancer, except mine started at a Ruby Tuesday's"

when Gabrielle and Louis meet I hope she projects a cringefail compilation of Lestat directly into his brain

Guys I need AMC IWTV to do Gabrielle justice. I need her to be so Fucking Gender. I need her to be living vicariously through the only one of her sons she can fucking stand because she resents her human life. I need her to hear about Lestat's intrusive murder thoughts about his family and just go 'lol same'. I need her to abandon Lestat to go do her own thing because she deserves it and she's more than earned it. I need to see her kill the first man she sees and steal his clothes because she was imprisoned in the role society wrote her for her entire life. I need her to say, and I quote, 'what if i waste this bitch?" when Akasha shows up. I need the show to expand upon the amount of off screen time she spends hanging out with Louis.

Oh, I think every young family deserves a little adventure. Wouldn't you say, Mounsieur Lioncourt?

Gotta give it up to Armand for calling out Gabrielle too for how she neglects Lestat
“Everyone hates her.  She is Lestat’s Mother, and abandons him for centuries, and somehow doesn’t manage to heed Lestat’s periodic and inevitable frantic cries for help, which though she could not receive them, being his fledgling, could certainly learn of them from other vampiric minds which are on fire with the news round the world when Lestat is in trouble.”
Neglect absolutely is a form of abuse, which I don’t think gets acknowledged enough by people when discussing the abuse Lestat suffered at the hands of his family.  While I have no doubt his mother really loves him, it doesn’t undo the damage she caused him and continues to cause him by abandoning him.  I had some anon come at me a while ago, accusing me of being a Lestat apologist and claiming that Lestat’s words about his mother could be untrue, since we never hear her side of the story.  But Armand himself essentially confirms Lestat’s depiction of her through his description of her in his own book.  So, you know, obviously, Gabrielle isn’t going to win any Mother of the year awards.  I think, in her own way, she contributed just as much to Lestat’s negative perception of himself as his father and brothers ever did.

if I was smarter I'd write a whole thing about generational trauma in the Lioncourt family and how it was passed down from Gabrielle -> Lestat -> Claudia and how Lestat and Claudia both became Oedipal figures in their journeys to become their own people
and it's interesting to ask like when it comes to nature vs nurture and how much generational trauma is genetic vs how much is from learned behavior and like even if Claudia isn't Lestat's daughter the TRADITIONAL WAY she is still his daughter by BLOOD so I wonder like, what that does.
also imagine just like how much of your Maker's trauma you might inherit if it's imprinted into the Blood in any way.

Armand and Gabrielle have the funniest dynamic, though.
Initially, her attitude towards him is very curiously almost tender, but then her oft-dormant Mama Lion instincts kick in and she goes 'that boy is bad news and I forbid you from dating him' at Lestat.
And from thereon it's pretty much:
Armand, muttering under his breath: Frigid bitch.
Gabrielle, filing her nails: Ghoulish witch.
